RO water up to 50ppm

I have had my RO setup for about 6 months. I didn't even think about for a while so I tested it with a little TDS meter.

I came in at about 50 ppm.

So my questions is, what level do you start replacing filters and stuff?

Also, is there a good cheap place for the filters and media.

Thanx

Typically, you will replace your RO membrane when the TDS reaches ~10 (depending on rejection rate). If you have a DI, replace the resin when TDS hits 2-3.

It sounds like their might be a problem with HOW the system is setup if you have gone through a membrane in 6 months (going by the tank in your sig, and that systems water demands).

what is the incoming water TDS to prefilters? you may need to change your prefilters. also do you flush your ro membrane before and or after every use?

Did you test the RO right after or soon after your turned it on to make some water? If so ... There is some "TDS creep" for the first little bit of water that comes out of the RO when you first turn it on after it has been shut off for a while. I would let it make some water for a few minutes first then test the water coming out of the ro. make sure the glass you fill to use for testing is completely clean.

No I do not flush anything.

It is not well water.

Incoming water is 80ppm.

To clarify the setup does have a 4 gal resevoir, not sure if this changes the flushing or what not.

I will let it run for a little then test, but with the resevoir I'm not sure that would change.

Thanks all!

If you are testing it directly from the 4 gallon resevoir, then no, it probably isnt going to be much different if at all. I would check anyway. It could be possible that something is leaching into the water from the resevoir although I dont know if it could raise the TDS like that.

If it's still high, the membrane may be shot. But you need to make sure you have the right flow restrictor on the waste line side of the RO and that it is operating correctly. Waste to good water is usually around 4:1

Okay.

So, I'll unhook the waste line, put in a jug. Pull out half a gallon. And as the device replaces that half gallon, it should make about 2 gallons of waste water?

Then I will now the device is working properly.

Then youll know that you are getting about the right ratio of waste to good water. Waste to good water ratio can vary a little but 4:1 is about average.
