ASM G4 Skimmer Question

I'm sure some people out there have this skimmer. Mine has been working great (6 years and cranking now!), but I noticed something wasn't right? When I would stop and start it to pull the collection cup out and empty it, than when I would go back to starting it I would have to pull the pump completely out of the sump to get it to kick on. So, I purchased a new impeller and installed it. Great, the pump fires right up correctly now but the skim doesn't seem to be as good? I have to raise the height up the pipe way up to get it to skim and never had to do this before (the pipe is parallel to the half way up the cup and I have never had it that far up?). I can take pictures tonight and post them, but maybe someone can tell me what I'm doing incorrectly or if I'm missing something. Help would be greatly appreciated. Maybe it just takes a few days with a new impellor, but I'm sure that isn't the case. I almost want to go back to my old impeller?
