Red SLime Remover Chemi-clean Question???
Hey guys,
We are trying out some of this product for the cyano covering our sandbed and wondering if it would kill the cheato in the sump also??? Should we pull it out for the 48 hour treatment? Thanks!

I wouldn’t recommend using it unless you've exhausted every other avenue. The reason I say that is if you don't get all the cyano out you will create a super strain that is immune to the chemi-clean, then you'll really have a problem on your hands.
However I don't know if it will kill the chaeto…. I would think it wouldn’t.

We've done pretty much everything else possible to try and prevent the cyano.
-40G water changes -Run phosphate remover (2 little fishies reactor) -Carbon (2 little fishies reactor) -Tons of chaeto growing in the sump with 6" DSB (trim every couple weeks) -We feed hardly anything anymore (small peice of seaweed once a day, flakes or pellets twice a week) We've tried pretty much everything but turning the lights out, and I don't really want to try that since we have lots of corals (SPS,LPS, Softies, Leathers, a bit of everything) We're open to recommendations if anyone has any ideas/thoughts! To late to scrap the idea of the red slime remover since I put it in a hour ago but just in case it doesn't work. Thanks!

In my experience cyano grows in low flow low light areas and once I increased flow the cyano disappeared. However I still get little patches from time to time and I just blow them off with a turkey baster.

If your cyano/slime is a bacteria the red slime remover should eliminate it. You may have to dose twice however for complete eradication.
Although you don't want to turn the lights off, a couple of days with reduced lighting can do wonders too. After treating, carbon and water changes are a must ime.

FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS
This stuff gets a lot of people in trouble due to not following the instructions. Do the water changes as directed. You may need an airstone in the tank. Read the package carefully. My experience is that it works really well. |

The stuff works to get rid of the Red slime, but if you do not take care of the cause it will come back.
Turn off your skimmer for 48 hours after each dose. It does not kill the Cheato, but if you are worried you can put it in a 5 gal bucket with a powerhead while you treat.

thanks guys!
We followed the instructions to a T. We put in an air stone so it bubbles up into a powerhead for very fine micro bubbles (as directed) and turned off the skimmer right away. I'll let you all know how it works out Sunday when we do the waterchange. Thanks again!

Well the treatment worked great!!! Bright white sand, and no sign of any cyano!
No loss of corals or anything else, but will be keeping an eye out over the next little while to make sure nothing changes.

That's great news as I was considering Chemi-Clean but because of the high cost used Maracyn instead. Not such a good result so maybe I need to spring for the additional cost of CC.

we have a 150G tank that we treated. the sandbed was totally covered in cyano (not on the rock or anywhere else, only the sand). We have a 30G sump with aorund 20G in it (we figured the live rock covered this amount) so we added 15 spoon fulls of the Chemi-Clean. Followed all the directions and 48 hours later, no cyano at all.
We'll keep you up to date as to what the future brings.
