Xenia question
Is it true that if you inject Alkilinity into the stem of a pulsating xenia, it will die off?

I've always had great luck with just really hot water...I'm always paranoid of putting stuff in my tank, so i just tried water on the off chance it would work, and sure enough, each one that i injected died within a day.

Well, you really don't "inject alkalinity", but I think what you're referring to is the practice of injecting a kalk/lime paste, which is also used as an alkalinity and calcium supplement. It's perfectly reef safe, and has been used in reef tanks pretty much since the beginning of reef tanks. If you supplement kalkwasser, then you already have the stuff. If not, you can use pickling lime, sold at some grocery stores as well as Walmarts when it's the right season. Otherwise, you generally have to order it online.
Otherwise, boiling water or vinegar are sometimes used, and they're both perfectly safe to the tank's other inhabitants as well (assuming you don't squirt any of them with it, that is). You can also buy commercial products like Joe's Juice or Aptasia-X. The latter I've heard really good things about, but I've never tried it personally.

just get some kalk, mix it with water, create a paste out of the two, and smear the xenia with it, works like a charm

I just reread the post and realized I was thinking xenia while you were saying alkalinity. Personally, I haven't had much success with kalk paste. It'll usually get rid of 98% of the xenia, but then it starts to grow back in a week or two. Perhaps I didn't cover it quite enough. If you get a pair of forceps (or something similar), you can sometimes just pull up the whole stalk without leaving anything behind. If there is a bit left behind, then I'd try covering it with a thick kalk paste or better yet use a bit of epoxy putty and cover it completely with that.

just get some forceps and pull it out. It will peel right off the rock it's attatched to.
