I think I have hypo-resistant ICH in my QT tank
Ok, this is sort of a Public Notice of what I believe is a current case of ICH surviving and attacking fish in a 1.010 hyposalinity QT tank.
I've heard many posters mention hyposalinity-resistant strains of ICH, and I think I currently have a strain in one (probably both) of my QT tanks. What's happened: Last year, i yanked all (both surviving) fish out of my display tank after an Ich outbreak that killed all but the remaining two fish. I've QT'ed any fish that I've put in to the display tank since then. I've QT'ed a hippo tang down to 1.009-1.010 salinity in QT tank #1, and moved him to a 2nd QT tank with 1.010 salinty, where he's been for 3 weeks, now. Clean, eating, and ich-free in hyposalinity. Last week, I did a 30 gallon water change on my display tank, and used the waste water (all good params) to change out my two QT tanks, both housing fish at different stages of a 5-week hypo QT. I reduced the display tank water with fresh RO/DI water to get it down to 1.010 salinity before changing out about half of the water in each of my two QT tanks at 77 degrees F. This week, the 2" Hippo Tang, the sole resident in QT #2 tank, acquired Ich. Parameters of this QT tank: Volume: 32 gallon hex with approx 20 gallon trash can sump Ammonia - 0 Nitrite - 0 Nitrate - 0-5 temp: 77 Cu: 0 pH: 8.2 SPECIFIC GRAVITY: 1.010 --> last week I purchased 35 ppt calibration fluid from DrsFosterSmith and confirmed that my refractometer has been correct this entire time. tested and confirmed the past two nights. I believe that there's Ich in the display tank, and i added it into the QT tanks last week when doing the water changes. I probably added Ich back into the display tank when adding corals in the past 8 months, that's not my concern. I doubted I'd be able to keep it away. It was a futile attempt, IMO, anyway. But my concern is that Ich has been in 1.010 for over a week now and I only saw ich on the Hippo Tang in the past 72 hours. No ich on the Hippo before this. It's actually multiplying in this salinity. If anyone wants to confirm this somehow, you're welcome to witness this incident. |
