Like to reiterate the importance of emergency plan
Hi gang,
This is kind of obvious but I just wanted to reiterate the importance of having a good back up plan ready in case of power failure. We had our first major failure last night since setting up the 180gal. Heavy thunderstorms killed the power for about 6 hrs, luckily I had planned for something like this long ago so I was able to wade through it ok. If I hadn't I think I would be including some of those sad smilies in this post! |

Sure. I sort of have a back up plan and a back up-back up plan. As long as I'm home I could run 100 foot extension cords from a small generator into the basement where the tank is. This works great as a back up plan, the problem is if nobody is home then you're in trouble. For this I use an Azoo air pump that automatically goes to an internal battery backup if the power goes out. I also run my in tank Tunze's on a UPS since small in tank circulator pumps are low wattage draw. The UPS is nothing special just a regular computer type unit, looks like a hard drive. I think the model was BR1200?

My back up plan isn't fully integrated yet, but it will include battery backups on most of the powerheads that should give me time to get home. at that point as my tank is run on its own subpanal, I simply turn off the power to it, and plug it right in to the generator, which should run all of it as long as I need (and another good bit of the house._)
