I am very interested in this poll. Also, any experience/opinions for a smaller (i.e. 65 gallon) tank.

My Flame has never nipped at any corals, but I don't have any SPS. I feed small amounts several times a day on the theory that if she has a full tummy, she won't bother the corals. So far, so good.

IME The flame angel is by far more reef safe than the coral beauty. I have owned two flames, neither has ever nipped at a thing.....

The one coral beauty I had viewed my corals as his own personal buffet....

I LFS however has a coral beauty in their softie tank and they have no problems....

I have never had a flame angel but I do have a coral beauty and I have lost a couple small corals thanks to him. To name a few i have xenia, some waving hands(anthiea), and some zoa frags. He was in a 75g but we have since moved to a 180g and doesn't seem like he has been nipping too much.Oh he also nips at algae on rock but I really dont care bout that.

I owned a Flame Angle for about 2 years. In that time he wiped out my Stylophora, and Superman Monti. He also ate my Favia, Acan, and my Micromussa. The last 3 were able to recover after he naturally died. But if he didn't I am positive they would have died if I didn't do something about it. And all this was after almost a year of him not touching a single coral! So Flame Angles are definitely not reef safe. And I fed well. Nori was in the tank every day. Plus 1 cube a day.

The other problem is that what starts out reef safe (more or less) can overnight turn into a terror. I have seen it happen, fortunately not with me.

Can't say really. With these species it will come down to the individual fish.

It depends. I had a coral beauty and it didnt touch any corals at first, but after about 6 months it began to go after my favorite open brain so I got rid of it.

The bottom line is that there is a vey good chance that either 1 of these fish could eat your SPS and LPS. Its just a question if you want to take the risk. I know they are pretty fish, but I won't take the risk ever again. Not after seeing what they can do first hand.
