Sedra 5000 not always restarting

My 5 year old Sedra 5000 on my EuroReef skimmer doesn't always restart properly after loosing power. It's been a real champ overall.

Would replacing the impeller assembly correct this or is this most likely due to something else?

Thanks.

Have you check the ceramic rod? I had mine that would seldom restart because the ceramic rod is broken.

Good points thanks. I have disassembled the pump, cleaned out the impeller and made sure the ceramic rod was intact and that the impeller / magnet assembly spins on the shaft freely. It almost seemed as though the shaft might be a bit worn in spots. I can see five years of constant spinning doing that to even hard ceramic.

Since posting this I've done some more hunting around and I've seen reports of the magnet swelling over time and becoming too tight of a fit which apparently can impede proper restart.

The answer is yes, replacing the impeller assembly completely solved my intermittent lack of restarting issue. Not only that, but within an hour, the skimmer started cranking out gunk that the previous impeller hadn't been able to extract, despite running 24/7/365.

Cleaning and impeller replacement are standard maintenance, especially after 5 years.
