Fragged a toadstool coral
I had a toadstool that was about 9 inches in diameter in my 85 gal reef that started to rot in the center about a year and a half ago. It would get better then get back the way it was but never really seemed to effect it much or anything in the tank. It started a week ago rotting the stock where it was attached to the main rock in my tank. So, I pulled him out to keep it from damaging my other corals from the toxins. My galaxea has been affected and has caused it to have some die off that i can't seem to stop. Any ideas or suggestions on what to do here.
Below is some questions on the fragging that i did. I ended up fragging the head of the toadstool. I moved the pieces to my extra large system. That was on sunday night. I attached the frags using the "toothpick method" which is where you put a toothpick through it and then rubberband the toothpicks to your fragging rocks. Now, the frags seem to be rotting and coming off the toothpicks. Should i get them out of that system and trash them before they spread something to the corals i have in that tank? Or do they maybe have a chance? The top sides(the part that the tenacles come out of) don't look bad. Please give me some advice. thanks |

I would try dipping them in Tropic Marin Pro Coral Cure (TMPCC). And if the doesn't clear it up after a while I would get rid of them.

I don't have any of that. I don't have any dips for corals at all. My cousin does have some of the Lugol's iodine dip. Would that help? I am not sure how to use it if it is a good solution. I read you add to purified water, but it didn't say "saltwater" and to immerse for 10 to 12 mins. Surely you don't put a coral in freshwater?
In regards to the possible bacterial infection, is there a good chance i will spread this to my large system that i put the toadstool frags in? I for sure hope i don't infect my corals in that system. Is that a high possibility? Please advise. |

I always use saltwater for dips. I have never used Lugol's. but I have heard a lot of good things about it. TMPCC is iodine based I believe.
I don't know about it affecting other corals its 50/50,IME. Sometimes it will, sometimes it won't.

I am soaking the toadstool frags in kent marine lugols dip right now. Should i risk putting them back in the system(the system that i moved them too, i am not going to put them back in the original system where the toadstool was orignally) and see if they survive or would it not be worth it to possibly infect my other corals??

You'll have to make the choice what to do now. But the best thing to do is to place them in the same tank and near the same location the mother was.
They do like a pretty good bit of flow for both mature specimens and for frags. So all I can suggest is that you ensure some decent flow. Hope it works out.
