Do you observe or act immediately?
This is a question that always seems to be 50/50 when it comes to quarantining a new fish. My question is when you have a new fish and you place him in QT, do you observe and wait to see if any diseases/parasites rear their ugly face or do you treat your new additions whether they show signs or not? The reason I ask is because I just picked up my first one today, a tankbred percula clown and I don't know whether I want to treat or just observe. Im going to see how things go for the first couple of days. Im curious to know though what everyone else does.

I generally observe, but I am of the thought that one shouldn't medicate something for no reason at all. To me, no signs = no reason.

depends on the fish. For say a angelfish- I would not use any meds unless I had to- and never copper. For say a porcupine puffer or boxfish- I would go all out with ich meds and all the tricks in the bag. Some fish are much more likely to harbor problems without showing symptoms- and some fish are more likely to be damaged by medications. For the clown I would just keep a eye on it- and let it sit in QT for 30 days.

I will typically acclimate new fish to the QT, perform a fresh water dip and then introduce the fish to the QT. The fish is then treated with Prazipro for 10 and then hypo-salinity for the remainder of it's stay in the QT. My target qt period is 6 weeks. Both Prazipro and hypo are preventative treatments and relatively easy on the fish. I do not perform any harsh treatments unless I'm treating for something specific that's been identified during QT.
