Mud for the sump

I am buying a used system and in the sump/refug the gentleman is leaving 150$ worth of mud in there with the water. Will that still be good for me to use since the system is shut down and hasnt completely ran for a week or so.?

He said just investigate it and maybe there is something I can do to save it sense it is so much and so expensive but I would not want to use something that may ruin the whole system.

I mean I know I am going to have to set it up and cycle the tank and sump for weeks before being able to use it for anything but dont know if I should just start from scratch on all items.
