Protein skimmer

I'm working on purchasing the necessary items for my new 50 gallon tank. Can someone please tell me if this is a good protein skimmer, and if it's a good price? Thanks

I would do some more research. Ask fellow reefers. I wouldn't skimp on a skimmer!

For that size tank, a lot of people like the CPR Bak Pak or the AquaC Remora / Remora Pro. These pop up in the used equipment forums usually for 1/2 the price of a new one, or less. I bought my first Remora Pro years ago for $50. If you are using a sump, there are a ton of models to choose from. Again, go used and save some money.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Hopefully, with the guidance from everyone on RC, I will have a beautiful tank someday, too. This site is wonderful!

are you going to have a sump? If so, I use a Euro-reef RS80 and its awesome! Such a workhorse.

A sump has many benefits - it adds water volume and allows you to run a much larger, powerful skimmer for larger systems among other things. There are lots of hang-on skimmers that will do just fine for your size tank if you're not willing to go with a sump this time around.

If you do not have a sump look at the Octopus HOB skimmers. I have the Octo 800 and I am happy with it.

Octopus also makes good skimmers for the sump.

I would go with a sump. You can put all of the equipment in the sump and you do not have it in your display tank.

a sump is not needed but gives you more options.

agreed that octopus makes good skimmers! I have a in-sump model that i'm very happy with- i'm sure there hang-on models work well to. On my 29g I have a BakPakII. It's pretty good but not as good as my octopus!

I have an octopus HOB on my 46 reef that I got on fleabay for $100 shipped. I can honestly say it's the best $100 I've spent on my tank(equipment wise).....I would highly recommend an octopus.....

What's a determing factor, or any rules to live by to decide if you even need a skimmer for a FOWLR tank??

I would say water change and feeding schedule is the determining factor. Really the dirtier your water is, the more ammonia, trates, and trites end up getting produced.
