How high off my waterline should my lighting fixture sit?

I have mixed reef with SPS....curious to see what everyone does with T-5's.

Currently i have them pretty close, like 6 inches off the water.....

Also, anyone have salt water splash or salt creep on the reflectors? I think I have bunch and its inhibiting light a bit. Solutions?

Thanks!

I have my T5s about the same at 6 inches, but I have MH as well (about 14 inches off the surface).

With T5s you can get close as there is much less heat, I have seen some deeper tanks with T5 hoods sitting on the rim pretty much. Just position it so that the light fills the tank evenly (too close and it may just light the center).

I got some think acrylic cut to keep the salt splash off of my T5 reflectors, salt splash will ruin them.
