The next step??

My tank has been running for just over 6 months now, and bar a recent problem with my nitrate level, everything seems to be going ok. A few fish and coral seem to be happy!)
My tank is about 40gal, with a basic built in filter system, which i have filled using live rock (I think its called a berlin system?)
As you can gather i am a novice!!
Should i consder improving my filter system, should i invest in lights, should i just stick to what i have, should i have a skimmer - lots of questions!!
Any idea's on devising a long term plan for my tank and equipment? I dont know where to start!!

definitely get a skimmer, in sump if you have one or some of the HOBs are good if no sump, no experience myself so can't help you there. For in sump, i would recommend a vertex in-100, for their price, you can't beat the quality. Either way get one rated for 100 gallons at least as the bigger the better.
for lights, that all depends on what you plan to keep and what you have to spend. I highly going with 250w mh and some kind of actinic. i made the mistake of 175s when i started and have regretted ever since. HTH

Oh yeah, if you don't already but have the room below the tank, get a sump, they have tons of good uses...

+1 on the Vertex. I have the IN-100 on my 45gal with 20 gal sump...you won't believe how much gunk it pulls out
