RO/DI system for reef tank Sps dominate
I am in the market for a new Ro/Di unit and looking for advice. I need to know if there is a unit that is enviromently freindly and does not cost me an arm and a leg for water and sewer charges. What I am looking for is a unit that has a NO waste water line. Does this even exist or am I the only one that is worried about wasting water and money with water that just goes down the drain.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Before I get blasted about this let me explain, I live in new York city and the water rates have gone up so much that I am starting to think twice about how much water I use. Thanks for your thoughts. Michael Anthony

The only zero waste system would be a rechargeable Deionization system, these are usually leased from companies that will exchange the spent DI with fresh DI. The problem with this type of unit is that without RO prefiltration they may have a short lifespan.
If you want a low waste RO/DI unit, look into the Spectrapure and Vertex units, both are 1:1 waste to product rather than the typical 4:1. They are more expensive than a normal RO/DI, but it may be worthwhile in your case

You want a Spectrapure UHE unit. I make over 500 gal of water/month without any change in my base water bill. I've used it since April and it has been rock solid. My tap TDS is 72-78 so it's had no problem giving me 0 TDS water even before teh to DI units.
It's about a thousan bucks, but considering the $ I was spending getting all my water from the LFS and gas in the Hummer to get it, it's already paid for itself. I hooked mine up so anybody should be able to do it. I store 65gal at a time in a potable container I got at a local Tractor Supply. It's the best $ I've spent in the hobby so far. |

None. Anything under a grand is going to be a 4:1 ratio. You can keep adding di membranes and refeeding your waste line back into the di membranes. But your going to spen a few hundred more doing that thus getting back towards a thousand bucks!

You can add another RO Membrane for around $75-100. That will cut your waste water down but you have to have pretty good water pressure for that.

You want a Kati/Ani De-Ionizer! This unit produces zero waste and is fairly priced. You can buy it from the Filter Guys.
