Appropriate lighting
Hi all. I'm in the process of planning a 29 gal setup and I was wondering what would be an appropriate level of lighting for it.
Tank is 30l x 13w x 18h I am planning on stocking it mostly with SPS and a couple of fish (probably some sort of wrasse and/or tangs) in addition to the CUC. Would also like an opinion on an Eshopps PSK-75 skimmer that I have been looking at using in a 15 gal sump/fuge to go with the tank. Thanks Tom |

I'm new to lighting myself, so I'll pass on that opinion.
As for the eshopps, you can't buy better. I have the hang on back eshopps and love it everyday. |

Are you looking for MH or T5 and how much are you looking to spend?

I was thinking T5 but I'm open to suggestions. Price isn't really a factor right now.

Current make a nice T5 setup for a 30" long tank, its called the sundail. It has built in dual timers, fans, and LED moonlights (even though the moonlights have no benefit, they look cool ) I had this light for my 29 and kept SPS and anemones.

T5 would work well. Just so you know a 29g is way too small for any of the tang species. For wrasses i would look into the flasher wrasses

How about the 4x24w ATI Powermodule or Sunpower? Arguably the best T5 fixture line there is. I doubt you would even notice the 3" on either end of the fixture. Any 4x24w retrofit kit from reefgeek would work well too. 30" is an oddball size for fixtures so most are only gonna run 24" or 36".

Thats not enough light for SPS, especially more light demanding ones. I have a 29g and i have a 150 watt double ended MH pendant. Works great. You can even get a 175 watt pendant too. thats probably the cheapest way to go. |

No you can grow SPS just fine with T5. There are many examples here on this site to back it up as well as tank of the months with only T5. I bet that power module puts out more par than most 150w halide setups.
