UV Sterlizer Q???

Hey everyone,

I was able to acquire a UV sterilizer from the LFS used and had a couple of questions. Its a Current 15w with a maxi jet 1200 feeding it. First, does it need to run all of the time? 2nd, I have heard you never need to change the light only when it burns out?

So from what I found so far after having it run for 2 weeks with the used bulb that was in it that it seemed to sterlize fairly good. I went ahead and ordered a new bulb because I did not know the age of the bulb nor any way to measure the output of the light intensity. Now the manufacture recommends every 6 months but that seems excessive.

As for running all of the time, thats the way I have it configured now but it just seems that to conserve the heat generated that I might be able to run it after the lights are out.

Hope these aren't weak questions but I am very ignorant on the UV end.

System its on is a 90 gallon starter reef, with 9 fish.

Thanks in advance.
