"Tiger Shark" magnet for 3/8" acrylic?
The Tiger Shark is rated for 5/8"-3/4" acrylic. Would it be way too strong for 3/8" acrylic? Is there an easy mod for adding thickness to the outside magnet that works well to stop down the strength?

Put a soft microfiber towel or a cloth diaper between the outside magnet and tank wall. That will put some space in, prevent the magnet from scratching, and clean the tank at the same time. Just make sure that you keep the towel clean so that you don't trap particles in it or that can scratch your tank. Anyway, that's what I do.
