true rating of Octopus DNWB-110 skimmer...

hi, i was wondering what the true volume rating is for the Octopus DNWB-110 skimmer... i know it's rated for about 125 gallons but as we know, most skimmers are over rated...

i have a 2007 version of the Octopus 110 recirculating skimmer... my father just bought the new in sump version of the 110... the new skimmer performs much better than my 2007 version... with my skimmer, i always had to set it to semi wet skimmate or else it will not reach the top... my father's 110 has very dry foam and even though the riser tube is wider, it is still filled with foam...

the new 110 recirculating are going for about $190 right now... i'm wondering if there are better value for the money...

here are two quick videos comparing the two...

this first one is my 2007 110 recirculating...

this second one is my father's 2009 110 in sump...

notice just how wet the foam is on the 2007 model... in the 2 years i've had this skimmer, this is the best i've ever gotten the foam... any lower than that on the 2007 and it will not reach the top... i know the 2007's bubble breaking level is lower than the 2009's but if i were to try raising it to the same level as the 2009 model, the collection cup will fill so quickly... the 2009 has only been running for about 3 days...!

the riser tube on the 2009 is about 1/3 of an inch wider... it is also about half an inch taller... this makes sense since the 2007 model is using needle wheel and the 2009 is using pin wheel... the bigger riser tube is to accommodate more air volume...

the 2009's foam looks a lot like the foam of the Extreme 160's... the 2007 model is not even close...

The new pumps have a pinwheel. The old ones had a needle wheel. Swap the impellers and see if that is all you need. They sell them for around $20 i think.

You can also do a meshmod and work with the venturi to get more air into the skimmer.
