question on using mangrooves in my sump

my 250 gal tanks got a 100 gal sump divided into 3 sections, a space for the water to enter (18 wide 12 long 11 high) the return for the water and a fuge thats aprox 30gallons of water

the space where the water enters was used for my skimmer but after the upgrade i had to place it elsewhere. so now i have large empty spot where water enters.
im thinking about adding a deep sand bed and plant mangrooves.

anyone see a problem with this? how many will i need? since the space is 11" deep how deep can i go with my sand bed?
