Small air bubbles can get into your fish and cause illness. Also the bubbles will cause skimming outside of the filter.

You'll get mad salt creep using an airstone in saltwater.
If you have a sump and skimmer, you should be getting all the O2 exchange you need. |

To the OP: You would be fine doing this, but IMO there is no reason to. For oxygenation, your skimmer is doing fine enough. You will also probably get micro bubbles in the display as a result and, while they won't harm anything, most people generally don't like the look. Adding it to your skimmer is something people have done, but if you are happy with your skimmers performance, I wouldn't go modifying it. That said, there are many others mods one can do to an ASM that are far better than adding an airstone. I would look in the ASM section of the forums if you are interested.

Aren't we suppose to run an air pump on a battery backup incase of power failure?

Your skimmer should provide adequate aeration for your tank. An airstone would just cause a big mess (ie. Salt creep). It is a good idea to have a battery operated airpump or two on hand to use in case of a power outage though!

Also heard that the air bubbles being bad for fish is a common myth.
I run an airstone inside my sump as i have no skimmer and i beleive it will help oxygenate the water, though the salt creep issue is bad |
