Can I dip live rock?

I am upgrading to a larger tank. Can I dip (coral/iodine dip) liverock without killing the bacteria and pods? I want to kill off any bad worms such as bristles

Last I heard, bristles were beneficial. Been away a few years though. Maybe now they are the enemy. Have they evolved into sea horse killers?

I have heard both sides about bristles. They do disgust my wife. Maybe it is beneficial after all

lol, don't add an arrow crab. usually a bad addition to any reef tank. they can do way worse damage then what bristle worms could ever do. im pretty sure many wrasses control them and they are much safer then an arrow crab.

there are good and bad types of bristle worms. most in the hobbyist reef tanks are not bad worms. i have had many people tell me they are not going to do any damage to the reef enviroment. but a wrasse would help you keep them under control. but i dont see the need to dip you live rock.

What about the OT question of dipping rock though? I am curious about this myself.

yeah i guess dipping for that. but if has been in his tank and has not had a problem, i dont see the need for it.

but i agree it is better safe than sorry.

dont get me wrong its not a bad idea. but i have changed over tons of liverock from tank to tank, but again i havenever dealt with a flatworm issure either.

I got flatworms off of a rock that looked great from a fellow reefer's tank. I attribute this to this because of the fact that I didn't have any before and after adding said rock they showed up within a few weeks. I have never dipped a rock before, but the only thing I would worry about is the rock absorbing any of the chemical and then being transferred into the tank. I am not sure this is actually bad, but just wanted to point it out.

Rather than chemicals, just dip in RO/DI - that will take care of the Bristleworms, flatworms and whatever might be in/on the rock. Yes, it will also kill beneficial stuff - but the good stuff will come back in your tank when exposed to good rock and sand. RO/DI dip may cause a cycle so don't overload your system with dipped LR - add a piece at a time so your system can sustain the change. JME.

Don't actually see the point myself. If you are buying LR aren't you paying the extra money for the extra life. If you wanted to kill the life on the rock wouldn't it be easier to just get dead rock?
