If your not using a pump or powerhead or something in the bucket to aerate the water, your waiting for nothing. If you want to be extra cautious, the best thing to do is let the water aerate overnight, this will allow the ph to come up to the correct level etc.

What I do is just add salt to my water, let a pump aerate it along with a heater and when it gets to the same temp as my tank (usually an hour or two) then I go ahead and use it. I have been doing this for a long time and never had any problems.

Yes make sure you have a pump in there to keep it moving. I also have a heater and an air stone in mine. A couple of hours to over night is usually pretty common. I make mine up in advance so it may sit for a week or so sometimes

When mixing my salt for a water change, I use a 35 gal. trash can, airline, and a pump set in the bottom of the can facing up. This blows the water up[ towards the surface and drawns water from the bottom, mixing the water and the salt very good.

If you read the directions on Instant Ocean salt mix, they say you can mix it and put it in your tank right away. I perfer to mix it for 4 hrs then put it in the tank. I want plenty of 02 in the water. I also try to match the temp as well.

Yes, match the saliniy. unless your trying to bring it up or down for what ever reason. I am sure there is other thread on that.

If you don't have a pump for mixing your SW, you could pick up a Maxijet 900 for about $20, and drop it in the bucket.

JMO, 24 hours unless there's an emergency, after mixing vigorously with a pump or powerhead. When I was mixing in a 32G Rubbermaid, I dropped a Mag 5 into the container at least overnight. Now I use an external Blueline 40HD-X to stir 65G SW solution at least 24 hours. I'm just anal that way. If I needed SW immediately, I would add it as soon as the solids have disappeared.

Off topic but might be of interest to you.

I mix new SW after each waterchange and it sits for 2-4 weeks (sometimes even longer)

In my Mix Tank (Brute garbage can) the SW mixes for 24 hrs and then I use a timer to run the mix pump 20min every 4 hrs.

This means that I have ~30g of SW ready to use almost immediately after my waterchange (generally every 2-3 weeks). If some emergency in the tank necessitated an emergency waterchange I always have the water ready to use.

If you have the room for a Mix tank it is a great idea.
