Does this LR look ok?
I am not very sure on what to look for in live rock.
I went to a LFS and they had a horrible looking selection of LR. Very huge and heavy pieces. So I am going to have to look toward the internet for my LR. Well i was browsing and came across this live rock. The pictures look really good. I called today and the sale goes through 1-12-10. The guy said if you want smaller portions of rock you just have to call and you can tell him what you are looking for. The thing that worries me is that the guy said the rock is un-cured. http://www.intmarinefish.com/liverock.html The guy is a really nice guy. He answered all my question I had for him. If I were to buy some for my 10 gallon could I put it in the tank to cure it since I do not have any live stock yet? Thanks alot guys! Last edited by billabong08; 01/11/2010 at 11:36 PM. |

When they show a picture of that nice looking live rock, and then the guy on the phone tells you that its uncured. It sounds a little funny.
If its uncured it definately won't look the way it does in the photo on the website, you know with all of the colors/corralline algae on it. (it may have some but it probably won't last through the curing process) The free shipping is a plus, but I would say keep looking around, and ask some of the guys on here were they got their live rock from, they can steer you in the right direction. Yes if you bought some for your tank, since you have no livestock in it yet, you could cure it in the tank. |

I looked at that site when i was in the market for some live rock. I did not end up getting it there but it is cheep for sure! IMO for a 10g you are not going to be getting a lot of rock so you might want to hand select it so you will like what you get. Are there any other lfs in the area you might find some at? Or try craigs list for someone getting out of the hobby that is selling... I usually se it there for less than 3 a pound if you watch it. HTH

Exactly. That sounds like incured rock to me. About average for the price if uncured.
I would pass. An unfortunate "too good to be true" deals. Here is a great deal by a RC sponsor. Www.marcorocks.com. If that doesn't work google macro rocks. This is THE place to order rock from. |

Oh hell this is for a 10 gallon....your going to need nothing more than 7 lbs for a 10 gallon. I'm cycling a 10 gallon now for the kitchen and a 7lb chunk is perfect. 7lbs takes up about half the tank.
Just get 5 lbs of cured from a LFS to get it started. 5 lbs will probably be good too because it physically can't have a heavy bioload. |

I've been buying rock from www.premiumaquatics.com for a long time. You cannot beat their bali rock. alwys looks top notch. + its light so buying small poundage results in nice big pieces with all sorts of caves and holes.

anything under 30lbs isnt worth to go online. No way can the rock look like that uncured. I went with live aquaria before and it was ok rock. Try to physicaly look at the rock to make sure no aiptasia for sure on it, not sure if any LFS guarantee rock but ask if they can guarantee no aiptasia on it for like 10 days.

that $2+ price is only if you order more than 100 lbs. Gotta read the fine print. As to the rock, uncured rock definitely doesn't look like that. Maybe that is a representative photo of what it looks like when cured. When starting up you certainly can use uncured rock, and use it to cycle your tank. When you would only be ordering a few lbs, the price is $4+, and that is pretty high for Uncured LR. I understand your problems, as my LFS has great fish and corals, but horrible rock. If you want to go online, it may be more expensive, but it would probably be better. If you want, and have the cajones, go to your LFS and ask him if he wants some rock from you. Maybe get $1-2 a lb, then you can get like 20 lbs of small rock, and can pick and choose the pieces you want for your tank. Then you can sell the rest(taking a bit of a beating, but worth it to get the pieces you want) to your LFS, and maybe if he gets good reviews he might try picking up some better rock for his customers.

The price on the rock is great, but the website looks pretty barebones to me (which isn't necessarily terrible, just something I noticed). I would be more worried about the company being reputable as well as the temperature situations of wherever it is being shipped.
