Copper Question
I got a silly question i guess. If i buy a new fish and treat it with copper and after acclimating it with my DT temp, salinty, etc, how would i introduce the new fish without getting any copper in my DT??

You should be using a Quarantine tank for this.....

Scoop the fish out of the qt with a net. Dont dump the water treated with copper into your tank.

well you always want seperate nets.... for QT and display... heres what I do.... Once fish is ready to go.....Get a bucket and put a fewgallons of water in it from QT tank and place fish in it... bring it to display tank... drip acclimate the fish correctly... once your are ready to put fish in display....get another container like a small bucket of only DT water.... net the fish with contaminated net... then put fish in new water with a small drop not allowing the net to touch the water... then I let them sit there for a little while .. now you are ready to catch fish with DT net and put him in tank... I have never had any problems...

Oh, that small amount of water that is one the dish isnt enough in my opinion to caise any issues. When i remove a fish from QT I actually gently shake it up and down to get as much water off as possible.

Natural concentration of copper can be as high as 1% of the level to treat ich. May be typically 0.1%. I would always make sure that any trace of copper (straight) transfered is diluted as least 10,000 times in the DT. If I know that a livestock is safe (venom/spines) for me to transfer by hand, I do so. If not, use the successive tank method. Put a few gals of DT water in a container. Transfer livestock to that water and then transfer again. I never use a net to catch or transfer fish in particular, either in a clear bag with some (QT) water or by hand if it is safe for me. |

Some feeds have trace amounts of copper in them as well that do not harm our tanks. the treatment has a much higher ppm value that a few drops of water with the fish will provide your tank. If you are nervous you can also always dilute the water that the fish is in with some tank change water or something like that over a couple days in order to reduce the amount of copper left in the water. By dilute I mean use balanced saltwater that has not been treated with copper and do a couple water changes after you are done using the copper in your QT tank, just in case that wasn't clear.

The amount of copper clinging to a fish is of course no problem.
How do you transfer fish in general. The use of a net to catch and transfer fish is the cause of many bacterial infections later. Avoid doing so. Not to mention mental stress of capture. That is why it is often necessary to use a clear bag to corner and capture fish. a cup or two of QT water is often necessary for me, therefore so is the successive tank method. |
