Sump full of cyano
2 days ago signs of cyano started to appear in my sump,it has now taken over all the glass and all my macroalgae, but for some reason there is none in the DT, not even a spec
so is it dangerous to the algae? will it go away by itself? and if not how to get rid of it? and will it spread to DT? also note i am using a miracle mud heavily planted sump |

Your bulbs have shifted. Change them, and buy a better skimmer

It's only dangerous to the algae if it blocks out the light to it.
It may die back on it's own, or it may not. I would siphon it out (perfect time for a water change). If it was going to be in the display, it would already be there. Something in the sump is letting it grow better than the display, like low flow and the light. It may be time to change the bulb in there. |

do you have a sump or a sump/fuge? a fuge contains algae so light is neeeded, a sump doesnt need light, so there should be no cyno in your sump. cyno is a photosynthetic bacteria. yes it can spread. cyno tends to grow in areas of low flow and high nutirents, if you add a powerhead that should help things a lot.

It is only in my fuge which is lit 24 hours a day.
Its not my bulbs..? as it is in my fuge not my DT. I will speed up the flow in there and see if it helps, surely a nutrient/flow problem and i dont need a better skimmer.... |

remember that as your bulbs age, they tend to get more yellow. This tends to make algae and cyano grow better.

The bulb is a power compact for the sump and is a brand spanker.

For now im putting it down to a nutrient/flow issue as i removed my sock filter from the inflow about a week before the issue happened, therefore i presume alot of uneaten foods and poop are sitting in my sump, ill re-add the sock filter, clean the cyano out and see if anything good prevails.
Does this sound like the plan of attack? |
