Peter D's 150 Gallon Build
Hi Folks,
Since September, we've had a 55 gallong sw tank up-and-running. A few weeks ago, I bought a used 150 gallon tank, 4ft x 2ft x 2.5ft tall. Yep, I gonna have to get the 4 year old a scuba suit so that she can move things around for me. In any case, my plan is to eventually set up a reef tank capable of successfully hosting a wide range of corals, from softies to sps, and I'd love to hear any suggestions that you might care to offer. 1) Let's start with the cabinet. The tank will be placed in the corner of a room, with a little over 4 ft of space from side to side. A 55 gallon sump/refugium will be located in the basement directly bellow the tank. (There’ll be about 9 feet from the return pump to the top of the tank.) I'll end up building some type of pedestal base, probably along the lines outlined at: http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1169964 2) According to info online, I should have water flow per hour roughly equal to 20 times the tank volume, which gives a flow of around 3000 gallons per hour. Would a 1500 gph overflow kit likehttp://www.glass-holes.com/Complete-Ove ... cstrfrnt03 mated with a Reeflo Snapper be a good combo? It looks like that setup would give me about 900 gph with my 9ft head height. I’d use power heads (Koralias?) to make up the rest of the flow requirements. Does that sound reasonable? What would a good layout for overflow, return, and power heads be? 3) For lighting, I'm going to go with a used Finnex 48" fixture, with two t5s and two 250 watt metal halides. Does that sound appropriate? Thanks! |
