My aquarium sand
Hi, my tank is a new 158 gallon setup. It is about 3 month old.
I first placed the RO water and a thin sand bed of crushed coral sand. After two weeks added the live rock ( uncured ). I did let the tank cycle for a month and a half until there were no signs of amonia or nitrites. Added my 3 fish from my old setup after two month. The rock started to look golden ( diatom? ) but now coraline algae is growing nicely. The only thing that worries me is the sand that was white and also became darker in many places ( golden colour ) do you think this will go away with time or should I take the top layer of the sand out?

It will go away in time and is normal for a newer tank setup.

I've actually found hermit crabs to be quite useful in picking diatoms off a sandbed. Sandsifting cucumbers are also good, but I don't believe they'll work with crushed coral.
