Edible Corals?
I was just wondering if there are any corals that can be consumed by humans. Any corals that are considered delicacies in other countries?
As a side question, say my dog ate xenia or mushrooms. Would it be a very bad thing or would the dog be alright?

I know palys are very poisonous, there is a few people that have rumored that someone's dog ate a paly and died. don't know if that's true but i would be careful....

I only know of certain sponges or tunicates that people eat. Corals... not so much. But I think that the paly dog is a legitimate thread on RC.

Ahahahahaha, the pink ones.
Only certain palys contain toxins, not all.

Some sea cucumbers are edible and many seaweeds are though neither are corals, I thunk that is as close as you are going to get. I read grape caleurpa is edible though that is not 100%

I don't know, but I get to drink coral juice pretty often when I start the siphon for my water changes.

Yeah, nothing like 3 year old fish poop in your mouth.
Luckily I place a towel on the floor when I do my WC, I could spit it right on the floor as fast as I could.

Not corals themselves but they do eat coral spawns (eggs) in some South Pacific islands.

Not to get off subject but I read that in ancient times Kole tangs could only be eaten by Hawaiin royalty and peasants caught eating them would be put to death. Or was that a dream?

If that was a dream, you need to quit eating the mushrooms. Lol

There are lots of reasons why people don't eat corals. First of all, most of them don't offer a substantial meal. The ones that are big enough to make a meal of tend to be full of sharp spicules that will shred your insides. You would also have to take care in preparing them to make sure the nematocysts were inactivated or munching on them would be a pretty unpleasant, and possibly life-threatening, experience. They also make cocktails of defensive chemicals from terpenes to alkaloids, some of which could make you pretty sick. And as others have mentioned, they can also carry palytoxin, which is actually pretty common among marine animals and is found in lots of corals besides zoanthids, sometimes in higher concentrations.
There have been some corals, mostly gorgonians, that were harvested commercially for compounds used in cosmetics and to a lesser degree, pharmaceuticals, but that's mostly ended.

One coral makes you smaller and one makes you large, the ones in your tank don't do anything at all. Go ask Alice when she is 10 feet tall.
