skimmer for 40 breeder
Would like input on a hang on skimmer for a 40 breeder. The tank will house small fish only. I've looked at the remora with the surface skimmer add on and think this will be fine. Would like input from those of you who are running sumpless. I have a 58 reef with sump but dont want to go that way with this one. Thanks

I'm in the same boat as you - I have a sumpless 40 breeder as well. In my local reef club the octopus hob skimmers are highly regarded. I've seen then in person and they do pull a lot of dark skim and seem pretty quiet. They are $165 at one of my lfs - I would assume they can be had cheaper online. I plan on getting one eventually
Do not get a remora hob- they are outdated and skim inconsistently - or so my reseach tells me |

^agree with both. The aquaCRemora is inconsistant at best. It can be good, but they are loud, and outdated as grimly says. The reefoctopus OR eshopps are both phenominal skimmers. I know from experience with the PSK75H, I am using it on my 20 gallon reef. It pulls consistantly dark skim, and needs little adjustment once it is set and broken in.

do not know about the reefoctopus, but I can state on the eshopps. The intake side is identical to a regular powerfilter intake, like the Aquaclear if you are familiar. The outlet side is a little more intrusive into the space. It is a pipe with the same diameter and size as the intake(little shorter) but it has to have a bubble-catcher sponge. The factory one is pretty small, but will have to be replaced with something larger, as the factory one clogs and backs up the skimmer pretty well. I used a pond-filter pre-filter. Mine is generic, and kind of large. I have also seen the mag-pump brand pre-filter which is just as big, but I think it may work a bit better. There is no pump inside the tank.

Just for good reference, the powerhead to the left of the "bubble-catcher" is a Koralia-1. The middle pipe is the inlet, and the pipe to the right is a pipe for an AC-70.

For what its worth I had a CPR hang on back fuge / skimmer. It allowed me to run a basic skimmer (had good pull of cr*p from the water) and a good size area for a fuge.
http://www.marinedepot.com/CPR_AquaF...FIRFEB-vi.html I got mine used from a local reefer for $65 |

I would like to hear from others who also run sumpless 40 breeders successfully and what skimmers they use personally.

I use a Tunze 9002 in tank. You can hardly see it. It just blends into the black back ground. Off the top of my head its about 9 inches long an inch deep and 5 inches wide. Pulls out what ever is in there. Just another point of view. Good luck. Mike.

i wouldn't run a skimmer for tanks that smaller than 120gl... just do 15-20% water change every 2 week! =]
