Tangs in Reef Tank

I currently have a 55g lps reef with 20g sump. 2 of the residents are a 4-5in sailfin tang and 3 in blue regal tang.

Obviously my tank is not large enough to maintain them long term...

But the plan is to upgrade the 55+20 to a 90+30. Will this be sufficient for the tangs (other bioload, not withstanding) or should I address their future plans in a larger home/trade-in?

We love the tangs and want to provide the best for them...

Unfortunately both of those tangs can grow to be a foot long and really need a six foot tank. If you want to keep a tang in your 90 gallon I would go with a Kole, Yellow, or Tomini Tang. Also, Don't make the same mistake I did by adding a tang first. Mine was a terror to ANY new fish I tried to add, I had to get rid of it.

the sailfin tang especially, will need a ton of swimming room, and require more vertical space than other tangs.

I think they can wait a year. Good luck!

Yeah, they are prone to get Ich if the proper steps aren't taken to QT and make sure they are healthy. There is nothing wrong with a Tang in a reef tank, assuming the tank is large enough.

Some will not agree, but personally I think you can add just about anything so long as it is small. If you become the typical addict you will upgrade beyond your current plans. The only problem is tangs, even small can be pretty bossy to the less cubic feet the more likely they will not 'play well with others'.
