Bumblebee chromis ? Any experience ?
Just been in my LFS and they have some Bumblebee chromis in. They have never seen them before so thought they would give them a try.
They are the size of a usual green chromis but have horizontal strips of black and yellow. They looked a bit like the juvenile form of one of the damselfish that grows up mean (Behn's Damselfish) so I wasn't tempted to give them a go ($5 each but who wants a few $5 fish beeting up the rest of the tank down the line) Are they new to the hobby and not yet in the text books or has the wholesaler got mixed up? If anyone has seen them or knows is they are typical chromis (shoaling and reasonably well behaved) could they let me know. Thanks |

They can be a bit mean when they school, I haven't had much experience with them just know from others tanks they can be aggressive.

It's not a Chromis.
http://www.wetwebmedia.com/neoglyphidodon.htm Here is the brief description from Wet Web Media Neoglyphidodon nigroris (Cuvier 1830), Behn's Damsel. Western Pacific and eastern Indian Ocean. To three and a half inches in length. The bright yellow and two horizontal black band juveniles are used quite often in the trade. At right a juv. in captivity. Below: juvenile off Heron Island, Australia. and subadult in Bunaken/Sulawesi/Indonesia. An article by Steven Pro on the genus Neoglyphidodon: The Beautiful Ducklings that turn into Ugly Swans: Damsels of the Genus Neoglyphidodon The description from the article: This is a very pretty little fish that starts off life a bright yellow with horizontal black stripes. It is fairly common in the trade. In particular, the frequency I see these available locally rises and falls with the fortunes of the local sports teams. I see them routinely offered as "Steeler Damsels" when the local NFL football team is doing well. Don’t you just love marketing? Unfortunately, these attractive little guys grow up and lose most of that yellow taking on an overall brownish color with some yellow remaining at the tail. The adult size is a little over five inches. They have a wide spread distribution throughout the Philippines, Indonesia, northern Australia, the Solomon’s, Taiwan, Palau, New Guinea, and Vanuatu. ![]() Also a retailer site: http://www.choiceaquariums.com/produ...blebee_chromis Bumblebee Chromis Neoglyphidodon nigroris ![]()

Thanks guys. Looks like I won't be taking any home any day soon.
Was looking for something peaceful to go in a 30 gallon tank to occupy the middle / top area of the tank that will house a pair of Mandarins (assuming my remote copepod trials work out OK). May try a Flame Angelfish and / or a Coral Beauty or a Royal Gramma. |
