Partitioning 30G tank into a refugium?

I have a standard 30 gallon rectangular aquarium which I want to use as a refugium. It's 36" long.

1) When I partition them into 3 sections (protein skimmer, macro algae & return), do I section them equally or do I make certain section bigger than the other?

2) When using dividers, do I make the height identical or do they have to be different?

I would lay it out to fit your skimmer and return nicely and whatever you have lft use for refugium. Side note, I think a standard 30, or 29 gallon is 30 inches long so you may have a larger than 30 gallon sump.
