Diamond goby
I was just wondering if you really nedd an attached refugium to keep a diamond goby in a 55 gallon tank. That is what liveaquaria says.

I have a yellow Headed Sleeper which has somewhat the same requirements in the same size tank, and with how much sand sifting mine does I wouldn't have bought him without having a refugium.
And to be honest, they are fairly easy/cheap to set up and so beneficial, why not use this as an excuse to set one up? If nothing else it hides your skimmer/heater etc. |

Ah I see then. You might be able to depending on how long the tanks been set up, but I don't know where that point is. I do know a lot of these guys starve to death.
Sometimes they eat prepared foods, but I don't believe they get proper nutrition from that alone, like a mandarin but not as extreme, so you're delaying the inevitable. Just my knowledge from internet reading, I wouldn't trust myself saying one way or the other without a fuge. |

Get one that is eating prepared foods. Mine eats everything, mysis, flake, pellet, etc. However my DT now has NO visible pods... but my sand is clean

All the Diamond gobys that I have seen eat just about anything that goes into the tank. I think it will be fine without a fuge.

I would never purchase a fish if it wasn't eating various prepared foods. Whether it's a goby, mandarin, anthias, tang, etc. To me, that would be a clear indicator that something might be wrong with the fish, no matter how specialized their feeding habits are.

Mine eats up brine shrimp i feed him when i feed my Clowns which is like 2 times a day. As my tank is a little on the small side i may be returning my Goby as i wonder if he has enough to eat in the tank. As well as he is sturring up little particals within the day during the day which is annoying. Besides that the Goby has been doing fine in my current tank without a Sump/Fug.

my golden headed sleeper is pretty big (about 3") and it took her a few days to get comfy enough to come out and play with everyone. She now eats flakes, pellets, frozen food and she STILL sifts sand all day.

The only thing you NEED with a diamond is a lid. They love to go carpet surfing. Most diamonds will end up eating prepared foods but try to get one that already is.

[QUOTE=mdb_talon;16657517]There is nothing "wrong" with a mandarin that wont eat prepared foods, that is just the way they are. Sure some will eat prepared foods, but it is not natural for them to do so. Definetely not a sign something is "wrong" with them though; depending on perspective it may be a sign of what is "right" with them.[/QUOTE
If you want to play the odds on the mortality rate of a mandarin due to this simple fact, you'll loose. They don't seem to last very long unless you've got a huge tank, and most people don't. That's why prepared foods in their diet is so crucial IMO. There are plenty of threads on keeping mandarins and they all pretty much boil down to one thing, providing them with food. They are a beautiful fish, but I'll continue passing them by at the LFS. |
