Help with choosing a pump

I am in the process of a new build and will be needing a new return pump.

125 G, return pump will supply water to the fuge, and I will tap into the return for reactors.
My 2 main concerns are:
Noise & heat transfer. I don't want to listen to the pump, and I don't want it heating up the water.
I do not need a huge pump, as I don't think water rushing through the sump is necessary. Internal or external - whatever works the best.
I would like to keep the pump under $200

Suggestions?

That's what I was thinking, I have a small Eheim, but they don't really seem to be setup for plumbing very well. I would probably hook one up externally to keep the heat out of the tank, they just have barbed fittings right? Doesn't seem ideal for PVC plumbing.

I should hope not for that cost. That is a bit out of my budget. Any other ideas?

I have my Eheim 1262 plumbed externally with PVC. It's metric but you can use a 1" threaded fitting for the input of the pump and 3/4" for the output. Just use a bit more teflon tape than you normally would and you'll be good to go.

The Eheim 1262 is a good bet. Running it externally wont reduce heat though. All submersible pumps are water cooled. The pump is cooled by internal water passages.

You dont have to spend the big $ for a Red Dragon. There are other Askoll 1500 based pumps for much less.

The Askoll Laguna 1500 is a pond pump that can be used for aquarium use. The Askoll is used and modified by several mfgrs such as ATB, MSX, BK (Red Dragon). These are really nice very quiet pumps. You can get the basic Laguna 1500 and MSX 1500 from Marine Solutions

You can get the ATB Flow Star 1500 from ATB

Looking at the MSX FX1500, looks like a good deal for 229, based on the askol 1500.

Can it be used internally and externally?

The FX1500 has a custom volute with unions and would be easier to use as an external than the other two.

another vote for the Laguna 1500

you can buy a regular Max Flo 1500 for cheap and easily epoxy a PVC fitting on it and you are good to go for a lot less than the ATB, MSX, etc. branded Lagunas.

remember that you can put a valve on the output side and reduce the flow and wattage at the same time too.

good luck

Is anyone using the sicce syncra pump that would care to comment on them? I am trying to buy everything for this build form one place to get a discount, and that store just so happens to not carry the laguna / askoll pumps.

I am strongly considering the eheim 1262, but I am concerned that with 6' of head to the main tank, feeding the fuge, and a couple reactors it will not be enough pump. I wish they made a larger pump, the sicce is 1350 gph or so which should be plenty.
