Generally from a build up of nitrate or phosphate (essentially food for the hair algae).
A lot of prepared foods, especially flake and pellet, can add phosphate and excessive feeding can result in uneaten food decaying and generating nitrate. RO/DI filters can lose efficiency over time and also allow dissolved organic material into the aquarium. There are a number of reasons why hair algae shows up - unfortunately using ro/di, a skimmer or carbon does not automatically prevent this nuisance. |
