What size is the fixture? Also what size are the power compacts and how many lights are there in the fixture? I had a simlar situation where I had a four foot four bulb 48" fixture that I wanted to use for a 24" long tank. Since the fixture was used I cut in half and now have two 24" fixtures, one with end caps that is nice and clean for over a tank and one a little rougher that is on my fuge. Obviously the layout of the fixture and the reflectors would make a big difference, in my case it was a simple saw in half job. I also doubt I would want to do that on a new fixture!
