Anemone ID please

Can someone tell me what type or kind of anemone this is?

Photobucket

I'm guessing it is fairly common as it was only $15. Went out for my cleaner crew and got crabs, shrimp, and snails. Then when I was looking I saw the sign that had all saltwater 50% off. So I ended with a sea cucumber and this anemone too.

As a side note the sale was cause they are redoing their saltwater area and need to clear it out.

What color is the mouth, it could be a condy.

If I what I think is the mouth, the bottom part, it is a orange color. They seem to be moving around and finding their place okay. What do they need to be feed, or was my LFS correct when he said they filter feed?

For some reason it appears to have that "thickness" the condy tentacles give off to me. You know it's green so that helps. hehe. If it's a BTA and happy then it will probably bubble up at some point. If not, I would go with condy or a heteractis sp.

75gsalt, went to Drs foster and smith and would have to agree with a condy. Now with that said and some other follow up reading, it seems the condy isn't a good choice for a future reef tank. They move, sting other corals or anemones, and eat smaller fish if they can catch them. Is it wise to keep this condy or not?

How old is your tank? You said you went to get a cleaner crew. Does that mean your first crew? If so, if you don't take it back, it will soon die. Anemones need a fairly mature reef set up w/ at least a 4 bulb pc, but preferably t5 or mhq. Unfortunatly fish stores hardly ever check if the buyer has the right set up for one, all they care about is the sale. Anemones need a variety of meaty foods like uncooked small pcs of shrimp, krill pcs (eyes, legs and all) silver sides, squid bits, myhsis, etc. I feed mine w/ a turkey baster or tooth pick. He will move til he finds a spot where he is happy w/ flow and lighting, then should stay put. Never attempt to move them and never try to pry them off a rock for you will tear its foot. They are tough to keep alive and are better to have once you have some experience under your belt. I see so many threads of someone putting an anemone in a new tank and it parished days later b/c everyone wants a clown/nem combo. It's your decision. I apologize if my hunch is wrong and your tank is suitable.

Thanks for the advice. Not saying your wrong, but I twice asked if this would be okay for my tank, that's about a month old. I got told all would be fine, everything would be compatible, and I was on the right track. Yes I got a little caught up in the sale, but I would hope that the lfs wouldn't steer me totally off course just to see this creature die

You will eventually learn as you get more experience with your tank that the LFS are mainly filled with ppl off the street with no SW knowledge.
You will eventually know more than the employees at your LFS. You should always take what they say with a grain of salt. Of course you will find a few individuals who have lots of knowledge and DO know what they are talking about. ALWAYS do your own research before going to LFS and/or when you find something you like. LFS employess (most) are only trying to get you to spend your money!! At my LFS, the employees get a comission, so they attempt to sell you any and everything!!
Good luck with your anemone!

Thanks all. Well so far they have moved into postition and seemed to stay there for now. Their tentacles have gotten bigger, not to say swollen, but bigger. Gonna go out and find some food for them this afternoon.

Okay, what the heck. The one sunk all the way down into his foot, then after staying there for about ten minutes he has popped back out but smaller and greener. Any ideas as to why?

If it's a condi, it may have been picked on by a fish. Condi's normally dont like to play host, and usually percs and osc's wont host in them either. I got a condi by mistake once, thinking my percs would host in it. They instead just keep headbutting it until it finally died. Keep a close eye on it and if it does look dead, remove it quick and run some carbon on your tank or it could foul your whole tank. Also, what type of lighting you have? Anemones need strong lighting-3 or 4 watts per gallon of T5 or MH. PC's wont cut it, and it will over the course of a week or 2 it may die. If your lighting is not enough, you may be able to help substain it by feeding it 2 - 3 times a week with meaty foods. If it is a condi, and you were wanting something for clowns to host in and you have the correct lighting-I suggest either a LTA or BTA.

Changing my story. Have to agree with you after searching the net and looking a a bunch of pics of both BTA and condy. Fed them a little bit ago with raw shrimp and they globbed onto it like they've never been fed.

What kind of lights do you have?

BTW, They shrink down to nothing to expel waste, they'll do it often.

Don't ask need to upgrade. Looking into that now. Know I needed to for the future, just didn't think it would be this fast. Probably going with t5

Thinking of going with Nova extreme t-5. Found a good deal and haven't seen a bad review on them yet, unless someone here knows of something.

If you really want a recommendation for a T5 set up, why not ask Grim Reefer our resident lighting expert, here's his thread

Make sure if you are getting one used it is the newer ones, not the older ones with a single reflector. You can tell this also by the width. Older ones put out 30-40% less light for the same electric bill. They are a somewhat entry level unit and the fans are LOUD compared to others. The bulbs that come with it are poop. But it is built out of quality components and should not stop working after a few years or catch fire like some cheaper units. They are a well built unit but not a lot of bells and whistles. I have had the old Nova model almost 2 years now and she still works fine. If she had a quiet fan and individual reflectors like the new unit I would love it still. But now I long for MORE POWER HTH
