Mostly softies tank stessed but sponges are thriving!?

Are sponges an indicator of over feeding and/or poor protein skimmer? My 5 year old tank is treading water....not much growth, and some heads of frogspawn etc retracting/dying. Yellow sponges are much more evident. Water parameters are good. Magnesium was low, but corrected 2 months ago.

salinity or sg 1.025
nitrate <10 but >5
mag 1460
phosphate .05
calcium or ca 460

not to be rude, but the question concerns sponges and whether their propagation is an indicator of over feeding or poor protien skimming. My referenece to parameters was a tip of the hat to all of the posters who feel the need to ask. I suspect a o2/co2 issue in my tank, but this thread is simply about the spreading of sponges
