29 gal DT/QT/HT ????
I bought a 29 gal from walmart. I currently have a 55 with sump and skimmer, my main tank. Now I was planning on using this as a QT/HT, but I am starting to think about just another tank. Would a HOB filter work with just sand or do I need LR too. Also will the plain jane flouresent light work or do I have to upgrade the lighting? This would just be a fish or fowlr tank, no coral or nems unless I did the lighting thing. I also have a 10 gal that I could use as a QT/HT.

That's entirely up to you. Do you have a sump under your 55? If not, that's what I would use it for.
To answer your questions: For a fish only tank, you can get away with just sand but you will be limited to the amount of bioload that you can add to the tank, I would suggest at least 20 lbs of live rock. and a HOB filter will suffice as long as you keep up on the water changes. and fish don't need any particular light, so it comes down to what looks pleasing to your eye. Now after that I would also suggest a skimmer of some sort for that tank as well. Good luck with what ever you choose.

Sump under the 55 already. I was hoping to get away from the skimmer if I used the HOB filter. I might as well go with about 20 lbs of LR, 15-20 lbs of base, and about a inch of sand in the bottom. Then a HOB, possibly nano, skimmer. Aww crap, it'll be another full blown tank, I just know it.

It always is, I had a QT that ran 24/7 and it turned into a full blown fowlr tank. If only I could exercise some restraint in this hobby.
