placing sand in tank

i have a 55 gallon and it has about 45 gallons of water in it so far (i am leaving space for the live rock i will be putting in withing the next week or so). i am hoping to put my sand in the tank tonight but i have a few questions first. as i put the sand in and it settles should i leave my pump and filter (aquaclear70) running or turn them off? if so should i leave filter medium in the filter while its running and sand is settle or run the filter with nothing in it?

please help me out i would like to get the sand in tonight so settling time will accumulate over night.
thanks,
matt

i would rinse the sand out before placing it in the tank then when you put it in, you will still have a sand storm but not as bad, it will still last a while until you get the LR in the tank for the bacteria to help the sand settle. but I would leave the filter off for a while to help things settle before turning it on

It is best to have the rock in first before sand. he rock needs to sit on the bottom of the tank (unless you plan on propping it up on supports). Otherwise the sand will shift under the rock and cause you rock work to become unstable. That said, be sure to thoroughly rise the sand before you ad it to the tank. I use a long (unused) oil change funnel to guide the sand down near the bottom. I would turn the pumps off while actually adding the sand, then turn them back on. Plan on changing the filters each day for a couple of days.
