Very loud vortech MP10s
Hey guys, I posted this over on the Ecotech forums but I thought I might get more views here. Any aid would be much appreciated. Here is the post below as bold...
"...looking for some help here. I just finished setting up my BeanAnimal overflow style system. Just circulating the water for the first time to get it all warm, etc. before I start throwing salt in. Loudest part of my system was my Eheim 1260 return pump which, after putting in some rubber mats to reduce vibration, makes a very low hum. In short, the system was virtually silent. This was, of course, until I hooked up my 2 brand spankin' new MP10 wes. I just spent the last hour with my brother trying to align them in every way we could imagine to get these things to quiet down. They are real loud all the time. We managed to get them so they don't really vibrate at all without much difficulty but they're still individually 4x or more louder than the entire rest of the system. (and theres 2 of em!) I spent a lot of time, effort and cash on this system to ensure quiet. I built the tank myself so I could have a 3/8" back pane of glass just for these pumps, which I had to have pre-drilled and then tempered because it was not thick enough for my tank without tempering. If only 1 of the pumps was this loud it'd be one thing, I'd just think the other was defective. This tank is in my dining room and has to pass familial inspection. Please tell me I'm doing something wrong? Please tell me there is something not in the included instruction booklet that will make these things run more quietly? They're totally unacceptable at this level of noise but this entire system was built around these pumps and I'll be just so upset if I have to give up on them. Thank you for your time. "

I have an MP10 also. [ on 3/8" glass ]
It took a week or so for it to quiet down and break in. It is still a little loud for my taste though. I only need to run the pump at 1/2 to 3/4 ,so that helps tremendously with the noise. Maybe [hoping] there will be an upgrade in the future to lower the noise on these pumps. |

Im in the same boat as you. I have a 30 gal long tank with one MP10 on it. It is easily the loudest item on my tank. I can hear it above the NEP light fans, and when the lights are off, I can hear it 2 rooms away.
I have adjusted and re-adjusted the unit and it has no vibrations, but the motor is just loud. Strangely, when I place the unit in constant speed mode it is almost silent, but when in reef crest or lagoon, it becomes very loud.

I have had mine for about a week now and can definitely notice that is quieter now than when brand new. Or maybe i am just used to it now...

It's a very common misconception that Vortechs are 'dead' silent. As others have mentioned, some modes are louder than others. You should notice a substantial difference after a week or two and the motor has broken in. If not, contact EcoTech Marine and they will surely help.

I had the mp40 and ran it for about 2 months. I was very upset with the noise it made. I traded it for a tunze setup and love it. super quiet. JMO
