overflow question

I have a eshopps psk-800 overflow with one drain. There is the black foam that fits around the drain and gets clogged with gunk from the tank and starts to raise my tank levels. Can I just get a new one while I clean my old one? If I take it out it gets really noisy.

Yes. That is the pre-filter, and should be regularly cleaned.

You can always just build, or buy, an aqua-silencer or Hofer gurgle-buster or whatever, then you can do away with the prefilter altogether. Just a thought.
