Real sea water or synthetic?

I live near the ocean and was wondering if anyone has ever used real sea water instead of synthetic in their tanks.

Steve

Hi Steve, IMO it's rarely worth the effort to collect real seawater. I used it for the first year in Cyprus, and really thought my source water was clear. the thing is there's loads of polutants in run-off that you simply can't test for. What sealed it for me was that the Paphos Aquarium felt it was not good enough to use, when it was free and right on their doorstep!
BUT...
If you want to give it a go, try and get a boat to go a mile or so off the coast, and if possible don't simply bucket it out from the surface; the best technique would be to use a pump to bring it up from a metre or so below the surface (and don't forget boats frequently shed oil when the bilge pump cuts in!)

Zeufus,
Thank you for the response. I figured it would be a lot of work and while I wish it could be as easy as going to the beach with some buckets, I figured it would be better to just use synthetic.

It's not really synthetic: tends to be dried seawater without the pollutants.
