What else do I need to get this thing to shine?

It's a 400 watt MH bulb with a reflector. Does it need a ballast to work and that's it or am I missing something?

most ballasts these days that you can buy on fish sites will fire mostly every bulb but some bulbs look different on different ballasts so its up to what color you want the tank to be.

I'm not really sure. I'm not home but it should say on the bulb right? I usually run T5s and PCs so I don't know a whole lot about MH bulbs. I do know that it's 400 watts and as for what kevlin, I think it's a high kelvin number.

It's going to be hanging over a 55 gallon tank.

Ok that sounds good. How much do you think it will cost per month just to run this bulb off the balast about 8 hours a day?
