Welcome Home?
So I just came home from summer session classes (about a month long) and my dad had been taking care of my 75g. He has a little 24 nano so he knows what he is doing. At some point he did decided to reef-sit a torch coral for a family friend. The details aren't really all that clear to me as to why it's only that one coral and all that stuff. I just know that he bought a 90g from another guy and wanted us to watch it while he cycled the tank.
Anyways, I come to find Vermetid Snails and Asterina stars and what I believe are Majanos... The stars and snails are everywhere, to include snails on the skeleton on my green bubble which is forcing it to close, and possibly even die. I am not sure how bad the recession is going to get, some days the bubble looks better than others. So far I haven't seen the stars doing anything stupid, but that doesn't really mean anything. The worst part is (and I am not sure if it's related or not, but I don't see why it wouldn't) that all my zoa colonies are closed up. The polyps appear to be all or at least mostly there, still, but they are all closed up little buds and their mats are gone. I assume this is related to all of this is because they were doing fine and wonderful before I left... With out their mats, are they a lost cause? I have tried moving them around in different lighting and flow but nothing seems to be really helping.... I have a colony of watermelons, pink lemonades and dragon eyes. Parameters are still good... pH is 8.4 dkh is 8 Ca is 430ppm NH is 0 NO3 is 0 NO4 is 10ppm My lighting is the greatest... it's just 4x96w pc 2x10,000k and 2x actinic 03. I can post pics later today when the lights come on in about an hour or so... but I just thought I would get this up here for some help ASAP. If there is any consolation he hasn't come back for his torch yet, and it is doing wonderfully. |

Yeah, he said he did 10% weekly, which is about what I do, but I went ahead a 20% yesterday anyways. So, we will see if that helps.
As far as the majanos go, I can use Joe Juice on them right? What about the stars and snails? |

Stars and snails are unlikely to be causing the problem. They will be everywhere when they have a population boom so it might seem like they are forcing a coral to close up when they just happen to be on it anyways.
If you continue with regular waterchanges and reduce the nutrients in the tank they will go away, they can only survive in great numbers when there is enough algae to feed off which comes from excess nutrients. Your dad was probably feeding more heavily than you usually do.

Hmmm, alright, I will cut down on the feeding of the fish, but I want to get my Zoas back. Should I cut down on the DTs too? I am really worried since they don't have a mat anymore... Is there anyway to get that to grow back?
