diatoms

Do diatoms signal the end of the cycle? Just wondering.

No. They are part of the cycle. The cycle is over when you register all zeros on your tests for a period of time. I gave it 2 weeks of zeros before I called it good. Sometimes diatoms come and go. Sometimes they come 4 months after the tank is set up - sometimes not at all.

They signal GETTING TO the end, but not end. It means your ammonia is now getting broken down into something edible to life forms other than bacteria, rather than just toxic. Like nitrites/nitrates.

Thanks. I just did a test and my ammonia is between not yet zero but not as high as .25ppm. Nitrites and nitrates are reading zero still. Is it normal for it to be all over EVERYTHING? lol. Also, there are little bubbles coming off of it.

You know, I've been over this bubble thing several times. I've seen a variety of posts.

"BUBBLE ALGAE! Get it cleaned or else your tank will suck!!"
"Your rocks are releasing nitrogen gas from nitrate breakdown"
"Water is displacing the air deep in the rocks"
"Your rocks are collecting microbubbles from _____ (skimmer, pump, pipe leak)"

What is true and correct, I have no idea. Anyhow, all I know is that on my two tank starts this year, the bubbles came soon after the diatoms, and went away soon after the diatoms did.

Thanks. It's not bubble algae. lol. They came as soon as the diatoms started and I'm guessing the LR is releasing them or the diatoms are because the bubbles get a little bigger and then release to the surface.

I've always had bubbles with my diatoms. The good news is THEY WILL go away, eventually. Tank looks like total crap for awhile when they populate it though...
