Chiller question

Hello all, this summer has been the worse summer ever. I lost 95% of my corals because of heat. All my sps, rare ones and a lot of others corals. I currently have a 40 breeder and a 27 gallon sump. The temp of the water can hit close to 100 degree. To prevent this again I would like to install a chiller. My question is, will a chiller bring down that much temp? Lets say my tank hits 100, which chiller can bring it down to about 85? Thanks

A chiller will help here, but first ask yourself if its not cheaper to just run the air conditioning? You can use evaporative cooling, but if your ambient temperatures are getting that high its not going to help enough.

I like the JBJ Chillers (quiet, seem to last a long time). Here is a calculator to help you size it: http://chiller.jbjlighting.com/prod_chiller_size.asp

+1 , no A/C and your limited. Ive had a JBJ mini arctica chiller for 3 years and it keeps on chuggin' along. No issues at all! I just pull out the dust filter and rinse it in cold water, pat it dry with a paper towel and Whalla! ready to cool. Mine is the older model arctica with the dial. The new ones are digital and "yes" they are almost silent. I hear mine kick in for a second when it activates through my controller, then after that, quiet.

If evaporative cooling (i.e. fan over the surface) is not helping much and a chiller seems too$$ then look to your return pump(s) for a possible 5-10 degree culprit as well. Many of the current brands put out alot of heat transfer. I replaced my eheim and my mag for a tunze silence pump and it dropped my temp in sump by 7 degrees. Not much, but it just shows that unwanted heat can come from many other things as well as lighting and ambient temps.
