What is vortec?

I see a lot of discussion about closed loop vs. Vortec. When I search to find out what this vortec thing is, I just find people talking about advantages and disadvantages. I can't find anything to tell me if it is a pump or a light or a car or a horse or what. Somebody please give me a link. I hate being ignorant.

Vortech, made by EcoTech, are high end powerheads with lots of different settings and controllability: http://www.marinedepot.com/powerhead...peller-ap.html

They come in two sizes now and three soon; MP10, MP40, MP60(soon). They have a seperate controller for setting the speed and the different types of flow patterns. The motor (dry side) is housed on the outside of the tank to keep the heat out of the tank, the propeller (wet side) is held onto the inside of the tank by the dry side magnet.

There are several "in tank" pumps (Vortech, Tunze, Koralia...) used to increase water flow. Vortech is one of them.

Thanks guys. So the big difference is that the motor part of the pump goes on the outside of the tank. You have remedied my ignorance with knowledge.

I agree with you that the big difference is that the motor pump is on the outside of the tank. Other things that it does that I think are also pretty big differences:
-They have many different modes to create various types of flow
-They all connect wirelessly so they can be controlled together to create very interesting types of flow

There are some downsides to the Vortech as well: Can't aim the flow like you can a Tunze, they are somewhat noisier, and you might not like the external bulge on your tank. If you can hide the dry-side somewhere, they are fantastic however.

I run Tunze in my main system, my new nano is getting the Votech MP10es due to size
