closed loop questions, possible vfd

Ok so I am planning on running one of my closed loops on a timer(mostly to save electricity since the pump draw over 300 watts) my question is should I(or better yet what would you do to randomize flow) use the ocean motions 4 way i've got or put it on a vfd? or both?
